What is the shower chair ?

A shower chair is a seat for the bathroom, thanks to which you do your toilet comfortably installed.. The design varies, but some features are common: backrest, armrests (sometimes removable), height-adjustable legs, castors for armchairs, intimate toilet cut-out. The materials used in shower seats are water resistant and the feet are non-slip.

For whom to install a shower seat?

Shower seats can be used by a variety of people, from the elderly to those recovering at home. This is the case for the wall-mounted or folding shower seat, and the shower chair with backrest that can be moved as needed. There are more specific models for disabled adults.

The different types of shower chairs

A shower chair or armchair can have one, 2 or all of these 3 functions: showering while seated, serving as a toilet, serving as a transfer.
There are essentially:
- The folding shower seat or folding/retractable seat
- The swivel shower seat
• La chaise de douche à roulettes
- The shower and toilet chair, wardrobe chair with castors or fixed. It is often called
It is often referred to as a "pierced shower chair" because it has a removable bucket.
- The reclining shower chair

When choosing a shower chair, the most important thing to consider is the functionality it offers.

What is a shower chair?

A shower chair is a seat for the bathroom that allows users to bathe comfortably. Designs vary, but certain features are common: backrest, armrests (some removable) and height-adjustable legs, wheels for wheelchairs, seat cut-out for intimate hygiene, etc. Shower chairs are made from water-resistant materials and have non-slip legs.

Who needs a shower chair?

Shower chairs can be used by a variety of people, including elderly people and those recovering at home. This is the case for wall-mounted folding seats or folding seats, and shower chairs with backrests that can be moved as needed. Some models are more specifically designed for adults with disabilities.

Different types of shower chairs

A shower chair or seat can have one, two or all of the following three functions: showering while seated, serving as a toilet, or assisting with transfers, with a shower chair with lift-up armrests.

The main types are:

  • Folding shower chairs or retractable/fold-down seats, which may or may not be wall-mounted: for sitting in the shower.
  • Swivel chairs to make it easier to use the shower. There are also swivel stools.
  • Shower chairs with wheels, which make it easier to transfer to and from the bathroom.
  • Shower chairs and toilets, wheelchair-accessible commodes or fixed. These are often called ‘perforated shower chairs’ because they have a removable bucket.
  • The tilting shower chair: this is a wheeled shower chair, which comes in a variety of models for people with disabilities.

When choosing, it is important to identify the features offered by the seat and whether or not assistance is required for washing (or when a carer or nurse needs to intervene).

Shower chairs for people with reduced mobility

A shower chair for disabled people is often a reclining shower chair designed to make it easier for a third person to help with washing. For some people, a height-adjustable shower chair with wheels is ideal. A shower chair for disabled people can be bariatric, swivel and sometimes a simple padded medical seat.

Why use an adult shower chair?

The variety of designs meets different needs. A disabled shower chair, particularly a reclining model, makes it easier to wash a dependent person. It can have various accessories, such as a footrest and safety straps. A folding bathroom chair allows elderly people with reduced mobility to use the shower without any assistance. Some people also use a wheeled shower chair solely for transferring to the shower.

Reimbursement for a shower chair

Social security may reimburse the cost of a commode chair with armrests and a bucket. A doctor can prescribe it for an elderly or disabled person. This medical device can be a wheeled shower chair (with or without a footrest) or a shower chair with a backrest. It is therefore primarily a commode chair, but it can also be used as a seat for showering. For more information on reimbursement, contact a specialist.
