Adaptable tables for disabled, elderly or dependent people

There are many ways to adapt a home to make it accessible for people with reduced mobility. Some alterations may be necessary, as well as the purchase of more suitable furniture.

A PRM table can be used by wheelchair users as it can be adjusted to a height of between 90 and 130 cm. Ergonomic tables are also curved (including the legs).

However, there are many different models of wheelchair tables, ergonomic tables for elderly people, multifunctional furniture and medical bed tables. Identités offers tables for use at home and in care facilities (nursing homes, hospitals, etc.).

Height-adjustable table for disabled persons

A wheelchair-accessible table is height-adjustable and comes in a variety of models with a tilting tabletop. These tables for people with disabilities can be used for meals and other activities.

Medical bed table and bedside dining table

A bedside table is a side table on wheels with legs that can slide under the bed. It is height-adjustable and some models also have a tilting tray. Note that some models are designed to be more versatile: they can be used at the bedside, in a wheelchair or in a lounge chair.

Manufacturers sometimes offer a table model with wheel, available without wheel for those who prefer. A wheeled table for patients is easy to move from the bedroom to the living room or kitchen, but bedridden patients only eat their meals in their bedroom. On our website, you can also find a table that can be placed on bed rails.

Removable trays: an alternative to purchasing an adaptable table

A removable tray is very practical and can be used for eating meals in a wheelchair at any table. These are generally removable trays. Some can facilitate the use of a desk. Armrests are also available.

Table for people with reduced mobility and/or desk

Identités offers ergonomic work tables, which are PRM desks with wheelchair cut-outs, among other models of tables adapted for people with disabilities. These tables can often be used for eating in a wheelchair. However, some models are specifically designed for work and are not very comfortable for eating meals.

Choosing an ergonomic desk

A few essential factors must be taken into account when choosing a table suitable for people with disabilities.

  • Activities: a PRM table used for eating does not need a tilting top, but this feature is extremely practical for reading. Some tables have tilting tops made up of several panels for even greater versatility.
  • Height adjustment: gas lifts and knobs are two very common systems for manually adjusting the height of PRM tables. The choice depends mainly on the user's level of independence.
  • Table legs: don't forget to look at the type of base when choosing a table for a disabled person and check the dimensions. U-shaped for wheelchairs or other chairs.
  • Maintenance: a bed table for eating or for wheelchairs must have a tabletop that can be cleaned quickly and easily.
